Description:
History and old-fashioned charm is what draws many people to Nevis, and this hotel is one place that has both. Situated on the Gingerland side of Mt. Nevis, built on the grounds of an old sugar plantation, the 18th century factory ruins are all around you. Beautiful stone walls and parts of buildings, and even the steam engine is there for you to see.
In contrast to the classic stonework are peach-pink clapboard frame structures that sit atop the stone work and create the hotel rooms. Large and comfortable, the rooms seem more like a bedroom back home than a hotel room. All the rooms are extra large with the second floor suites boasting cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans with good cross ventilation to catch the island breeze. Simply, there is no air-conditioning as you really don't need it.
The rooms are spacious but at the same time cozy, with refrigerators, phone, hair dryers, irons and ironing boards, coffeemakers and fans. They each have shaded terraces or verandas and wonderful views everywhere, of the gardens, Mount Nevis and the neighboring island of Montserrat.
A large circular pool sits behind the hillside property in the shadow of the mountain peak, which is the center of the island. Down near an activity room library there's a Jacuzzi and tables with umbrellas on a lovely stone terrace. There's also a pool table and large screen TV for entertainment.
The dining room, the Cooperage, is a favorite on the island, especially for its outdoor Caribbean buffets and dancing on one of the outdoor terraces. Wait staff are very friendly and accommodating.
In many ways, Old Manor has the best of both worlds. In addition to its quiet, old world inn, it also owns the Beachcomber beach bar on lively Pinney's Beach, where guests can go and relax on the beach, where the Four Seasons is located. The restaurant serves casual lunches and dinners, including fresh seafood specialties, and is the location of the Beachworks boutiques (another one is in Charlestown), selling fashionable island-style clothing, accessories, and tees, silk-screened on Nevis. With its friendly service and a terrific sunset vantage point, the Beachcomber is a great casual compliment to the more formal feeling of the hotel. Transportation to and from the hotel can be arranged.
The Hotel will arrange active sports, such as tennis, golf, horseback riding, sailing, diving, and snorkeling for you very easily although there are no specific facilities on the property besides the 30 foot diameter circular pool. There are no specific programs for children.
